I re-read "The Great Gem of Rickensberg" recently. When I first read it, I had a major crush on the hero, and looking back I was convinced there was a horrible torture scene in which the hero is threatened with his greatest fear - spiders as it happened. Or didn't. On re-read, there was no such scene, and the character didn't appeal to me at all.
