have recently realized that i’ve been writing original stuff/fic for like 7-8 years on and off and that’s kinda insane to me. i really only consistently started writing fics in like 2017 i would say, and i focused on original stuff more before that (though none of it is good), with a few fics written here and there. so here’s an overview of what i wrote and my opinions on it!

also im starting at 2014 bc thats when i really started writing anything at all that wasn’t just like short one direction drabbles and handwritten percabeth oneshots.

2014

fandoms i was into: supernatural

what i wrote: i don’t remember writing anything other than this very angsty, very badly-written destiel au that i barely remember the premise of. all i remember is that dean and cas were like hospital patients and they were hunting some kind of ghost or something ? i have no idea and i lost all my work when i switched laptops so :) have no idea what was going on then. 

2015

fandoms i was into: 5sos, all time low, fall out boy

what i wrote: i actually don’t think i wrote anything during this time. it was about this time where i went through my i-wanna-be-basic phase, so i tried my hardest not to engage w fandom at all, which didn’t last very long lol.

2016

fandoms i was into: marvel, 5sos

what i wrote: i didn’t write any fic during this time, i only really worked on original works. i had an entire series of spinoffs planned, but they were your typical middle school/14 year old high school contemporaries. at the base of them, i think the ideas were pretty decent, and i think i could rework them into something decent, but i have zero desire to look back on that tbh.

2017

fandoms i was into: the raven cycle, bts

what i wrote: for the majority of this year, i was into trc and other book fandoms. this was the year that i made my ao3 and ao3 user hyucksdream was born (though that wasn’t the username back then and im very glad i moved to a different ao3 recently). i wrote about 6 pynch fics, though they’re more like drabbles with how short they are (7k words total), and refamiliarized myself with writing characters that aren’t my own. this period of time, about aug 2017-jan 2018 was basically me just finding a coping method for high school and allowing myself to take part in fandom again. i stanned bts in november 2017, and from there on out, most of what ive written is kpop fic. reading back on my pynch fics is weird especially when looking back at my characterizations. characterization has always been one of my strengths, and i feel like ive improved a lot in every other area except characterization. idk if thats a good or bad thing lol.

2018

fandoms i was into: bts, nct, stray kids, pentagon

what i wrote: 39k words ! this year was the year that fic writing really became one of my main hobbies and not something i picked up every few months when i decided i needed to get my mind off of the shitshow that is my life :) i did a cross-country move in august this year and had no friends, which left me with a lot of writing time. 

i wrote 19.8k words for bts, mainly taekook and yoonmin, and the rest came from nct. i wrote more than 10k for a fic for the first time, though i only wrote markhyuck in terms of nct fic. looking back, none of these fics are objectively good, which is why ive moved to a different ao3 bc i cant stand looking at them, but i dont wanna delete them. still, even though they aren’t objectively good, i can see my improvement and see myself getting more comfortable with adapting ideas to the way i like them, instead of what readers might wanna read. if i had to pick a favorite out of the 7 fics i wrote this year, i would still choose wyisfts, just bc it was my first time writing something that i consider longer than a one shot. plotwise, i hate the fic. i also hate the characterization but i was 16 when i wrote it and obviously my tastes are going to change over 3 years. 

2019

fandoms: nct/wayv, itzy, txt, stray kids, ateez

what i wrote: i wrote my first chaptered fic ! i experimented with writing non-mahae ships for nct ! i wrote 62k words ! i actually only wrote 4 fics before taking a break from writing and only wrote for nct, but i think this was a pivotal year for my writing just bc of the experimenting i did + the freedom i gave myself. i wrote a 40k mahae fic, a renhyuck oneshot, a xiaoyang drabble, and another mahae fic. im pretty proud of the second mahae fic i wrote, the last one i wrote before not posting another fic for like 9 months :D i also started thinking about the merfolk fic im about to finish writing now in present day, which is crazy to me. this year was pretty important in terms of writing, and i think i got more confident in my writing as a result of experimenting with style and ships. 

2020

fandoms: nct, tbz, treasure, wei, txt, itzy

what i wrote: i made a new ao3 acc oct 2020 that was initially meant for tbz side-posting/other short drabbles, but it’s slowly become my main ao3 that ive decided to permanently move over to. i wrote 120k, which is insane to me. i wrote new ships — nohyuck, jaemsung, bbangmoon, bbangkyu — which was really fun to do. i feel like my taste in ships has gotten a lot more refined, and i dont just seek out the most popular ship to enjoy content from. throughout this year, i worked on my merfolk fic, though it still hasn’t been posted. 

i feel like im proud of nearly all of the fics i wrote this year, specifically my football players nohyuck fic and teachers bbangmoon fic. i think my writing improvement is less tangible for this year, but i think i improved in minor things like dialogue and other things ive been not as confident about. ive also been moving away from nct ficdom since like may/june 2020 and though i havent been able to completely leave (my monkey brain keeps coming up w good nohyuck fic ideas), ive been writing more and more for other fandoms, esp since nct has dropped from my top groups list for the most part. 

2021 (so far)

fandoms: tbz, cix, treasure, wei, txt, itzy, cravity, victon, other misc 4th gen bgs

what i’ve written: so far this year, my wc is 44.8k words. ive been working on finishing my merfolk fic so i can leave nct ficdom, ive posted 1 cix fic and ive been working on another, but really, my main focus has been merfolk fic. in terms of ideas, most of my ideas have been for tbz and cix, though treasure has been peaking my interest for writing lately. ive been thinking about writing a variety of ships: hunhee, gonhun, bbangnyukyu, sangmilcob, nohyuck, jikyu etc. ive been letting myself write whatever i want these days, instead of sticking to a really strict schedule, and most of my fics have been getting above 10k words, even when i dont want them to be? i feel like ive returned to using fic writing as a lowkey hobby, which is what i like it to be. hopefully i can experiment more with different fandoms, and finally get merfolk fic done with so i can move on :D

overall, ive stopped writing original wips mostly bc i just dont have the time to stay consistent with them, and fic writing comes more naturally to me bc i dont have to make up characters ! maybe in the future i’ll play around w some of my original ideas though, bc some of them are too good to go to waste.
